PRESS RELEASE 2004

Chichester Calls wheelchair Amnesty at Drum-a-thon

Former Royal Marine Adrian Mills from West Wittering, now facilitator of Chichester’s Community Drum Circle, is organising Britain’s first ever 24-hour Drumming marathon to benefit disabled people /Para-athletes in Gambia Africa who need wheelchairs to play sports and lead independent lives, some have no means for mobility.

The event will be in the Venue, Spur Road, Chichester (www.thevenueuk.com) 7pm on 22nd September finishing 11pm on Thursday 23rd, a special benefit gig with top African bands and roots performers at over the two days.

Adrian Mills himself in a wheelchair, whilst visiting Gambia in February was touched by the extreme conditions and needs of the disabled people in Sarakonda in Gambia in West Africa earlier this year. After returning, he realised that with his experience as Sports coach and community development worker, it would be possible to do something to help. Disabled himself, by using a lightweight wheelchair, he has access to a healthier lifestyle, independence and freedom – a contrast to the people he had met. As organiser of the monthly African drum circle, taking place in the heart of Chichester, Adrian has decided to put on this special African music event to share the many gifts of the African people and to raise funds for wheelchairs and sports equipment for the disabled people in Gambia.

This two-day indoor festival goes under the name of African Heartbeat including a drumming marathon, this is a sponsored event in co-operation with the Venue/Revelation Church and open to anybody to come along enjoy the music and join in , drums for hire at £3. The drum circle will be ongoing for 26 hours and there will be bands, DJs and musicians playing a mixture of world music, reggae and hip hop in support. There is also a roots café serving African dinner and breakfast, an alternative therapies, chill-out room. Several charities will be publicising their African activities, including Oxfam and Water Aid. There will be stalls selling African cloths and other products.

Opening with Sam Oyediji at 7pm on Wednesday night, followed by Jahmma from Portsmouth, then an African/English band called Kusanganisa (which means togetherness), followed by DJs and at 4pm Beyond the beat Acoustic. Top drummers and facilitators from around the country will be there to help out all and any participants who want to try their hand at drumming or they can just dip in and out get some food and healing and listen to the music for as along as the want. This is a sharing of love, peace and unity and community building at its best. The 26 hour session will be broken up with bands playing, workshops dancing and jam sessions every three hours School groups are welcome, finishing with a special faunally performance by The freedom choir and the African/Gambian Master drummers Abaraka group, from Brighton. Appearing Thursday 23rd 7-9pm

As well as cash donations made to (www.wheelsforafrica.org.uk), Adrian is looking to receive donations of mobility aids on the night, using the night as an amnesty, please bring any old working wheelchairs, bikes or computers. Items can be stored there on the night.

The event has been made possible by sponsorship from the Revelation Church who has donated the Venue for the event.
