Ever since Band Aid, we have all been a lot more aware of the tragic events that are taking place in Africa. The Gambia situated on the West Coast however is often overlooked; this is probably due to its long lasting association with the UK. More recently, after many years of occupation, the Gambian people were given back their independence. This should have been a helpful solution to the countries problems however as in many of these situations, where a larger country comes in to sort things out, we the UK, left them with very little. The Gambia, known for its river, is a small, poor country with no export to speak of and in dire need of our help.

On the 22nd and 23rd of September of 2004, we ran a special event at the Venue in Chichester. We planned to have a World Music festival concentrating on African Music with a focus on The Gambia. Over the two evenings there was many different acts playing with a selection of DJs and the W’dada sound system, including many of the Master Gambian Drummers.

At the same time as the festival entertainment there was a 24 hour drumming Marathon going on, for all those budding drummers who want to shake their thing, get into the spirit of things and play some African rhythms. African drumming is known as the heartbeat of African Music and with this in mind we believe that it sets the stage perfectly to raise money for and the awareness of, Africa, Gambia, and the African traditional music for all too see. The drum circle idea has come from groups playing together over thousands of years and gives a great example of community spirit and interactive musical ability.
