The Southdown's Drum Club was started in Chichester in 2001 and was the brainchild of Drummer Adrian Mills. He and his friends decided to put on the first Drum Circle in Chichester because although they were lots of people drumming and circles were used in other countries as community building projects, drum circles in this country were mainly facilitated as drum workshops. This is where students are taught how to drum using different rhythms, rather than having a free forum for expression. The essence of the Drum Circle is like any other musical jamming session, where musicians come together to provide a platform for creativity and expression channelled through the groups collective energy. We have tried to harness this free energy, by creating a place where anybody of any ability, can experience the overwhelming goodness and natural high gained from the mere participation in the circle. This ancient art form is likened to the very first musical expression or interpretation of the body; the drum being representative of the heart beat of life itself and the natural rhythms of nature.

The thoughtful young people in the community have starting a new form of community integration, interaction and communication. This has been designed simply to bring people together and to share in a dynamic new group activity called a Drum circle. Here you can mix with a collection of likeminded people, escape the hustle-bustle of the ever-growing competitive marketplace to be with friends on a cold winters night. Chichester provides the perfect venue and atmosphere for the coming together of minds, bodies and souls. This is the perfect place to let go and make as much noise as possible in the latest craze drum jamming. Now everybody young and old can become a musician, sharing in this musical expression, each person can find their voice through the drum, take part as an equal and enjoy the magical experience that is created by these wonderful rhythms and enjoy the spiritual energy created within the drum circle.

The Drum Circles have become so successful that circles in four new areas locally have been created, with circles now taking place in Rogate, Portsmouth, Godalming, Brighton and Chichester. We are also now being commissioned to play in schools, youth clubs and many corporate events, such as the 200-drum event at the Albert hall last summer. Facilitators are looking to also looking to play in churches and any other venue that wants to experience the power of drumming, being seen as healthy practice for everybody who takes part. With the incorporation of the physical workout and cognitive /coordination skills of the right and left brain, African drumming involves every aspect of well being, exercising all physical, mental, social and spiritual elements of our being. The circle is also the perfect stage for the more courageous, confident and creative beings. Creating a safe place for egos to be set free and a safe environment to let go and express you're inner child.

We have a Christmas vision, dedicated to all those suffering around the world, that with the help of every person we one day can achieve world peace. It is hoped that by the year 2010 Drumming will be in every city in England providing drum circles for every community. It was agreed that this should be for the sharing of minds and abilities for the making of music a movement for its time. Expressing the energies brought together in that one place at that time in history. Believing that intrinsically each circle is perfect and will bring a combination of new and old energies, being a mixture of cultural knowledge, experience and expression, that becomes a colourful tapestry of sight, sound and movement, unequalled by any other of its kind. Each circle being unique and perfect as it is different. This is the place to bring all you have, to be yourself and create a new positive self.

The idea for these types of circles evolved from the cafes in South Africa where musicians would meet and enjoy an afternoon of uninhibited non-judgemental, non-confrontational multi-racial musical fun, creating an atmosphere to learn and exchange ideas.

Gradually other musicians would join in around the drumming group and colour up even more the beautiful sounds erupting from the circles of smiles. Street performers have enjoyed these happenings for many years, where unplanned, groups of musicians would turn up for an improvisation session where an anything goes policy would be observed and allow each performer to show off his wears and his (or hers) ability to capture and mystify their audience. Within the circle you can not only take part in the drumming but experience first hand the energy that these magical performers can provide.

So the next Drumming is our FISHBOURNE Circle NEAR Chichester planned EVERY Friday. Costs £7 + £3. This looks to be the biggest and best yet with more drums and more people than ever before. Seeking the return of our facilitators from The West Coast of Africa back from their travels with lots of new and interesting rhythms, being second to none in this country for Rhythm and Dance, it will be a night to remember!
